The Flirtations bounce back for the new album with a track that is aimed right at the Duffy and Amy Winehouse crowd, without compromising or losing its authentic Northern Soul flavour. What's old is new and this new song, "Camouflage", is as modern as they come, yet as retro as they come all at the same time. These are the original Flirtations, Earnestine Pearce, Shirley Pearce, and Pearly Gates, who originally were the Gypsies. They have been together recording for forty four years and look just fabulous still, right up to this day. Pearly Gates, real name Vi Billups, has been a friend of mine for thirty years. The girls started out as the Gypsies on Old Town Records, a classic teenage girl group from New York, with the early sixties classics, "Jerk It", and the Northern Soul legendary classic "It's A Woman's World", before becoming The Flirtations, and emigrating to England. They had many hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including "Nothing But A Heartache", and another Northern Soul classic, "Need Your Love", on the Deram label. In the late seventies they disbanded, and I got to produce a whole album on Pearly, called "No Two Ways About It", during the classic disco era, an album for Music Business legend, Artie Mogul ,once he had left United Artists in 1979. But he reneged on the deal, and I never got paid, and the album never came out, till years later, when I started using the tracks on my Nightmare Gold series in 1986, and then eventually the tracks were all used on Hot Records 1995 CD release, "The Best Of Pearly Gates". In the meantime, the Flirtations, without Pearly, had reformed for Proto Records, for Barry Evangeli, with the high energy anthem, "Earthquake", which Ian Anthony Stephens produced. This lineup of The Flirtations then went to Passion Records, under Anne Plaxton, and I got to produce them on "Read All About It". And at the same time, Pearly herself did a solo track for a label called Funkin Marvellous, called "Action", which George Hargreaves produced, and this was a huge floorfilling classic, and one of the most popular High Energy records of the 1980s. Next, I myself produced her next single for that label, called "Third Time Lucky". Then Pearly rejoined the Flirtations, and all three original girls, Earnestine, Shirley, and Pearly, were back together once again. We then did a Flirtations single for Nightmare Records, called "Back On My Feet Again", and also a solo track with Pearly called "One Less Bell To Answer" . Finally we had so many tracks with Pearly that we completed the "Best Of Pearly Gates" album for Hot Productions. I have now known Pearly for thirty years, and yet she still looks thirty years old. Very few 1960s girl groups are still together, and ever fewer look like these fabulous three. My girls. And now we have cut our fourth consecutive song for Centre City Records - and the three ladies will have you dancing off the ceiling. The new album, "Northern Soul 2008" was released on June 30th on Centre City Records, distributed once again by Passion Music and Pinnacle, and available to pre-order through the new website, http://www.ianlevine.co.uk This new Northern Soul album is a sequel to our album from last year, "Northern Soul 2007" which was the very first release on Centre City Records. I have spent thirty two years honing my craft to the point when I am able to produce authentic records like this. There are some small minded people who call themselves fans of Northern Soul who refuse to accept that anybody can make a new record that sounds like the real thing. But with well over two and a half million YouTube hits, they seem to be thankfully a very small minority, and my YouTube page is officially the 54th most watched UK Music Channel on YouTube of ALL-TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The new album consists of twenty four brand new 2008 songs by soul and disco legends. Each song has an accompanying video of the artist basically performing it the studio and in outside locations, and the DVD has four extra bonus tracks too. All three girls and I co-wrote this fabulous uplifting song, along with my long time producing partner Clive Scott.

Kitty Corbin makes her debut for the brand new "Northern Soul 2008" album with the fabulous "Guessing Games". Out of all the tracks on the album, this one has become the real sleeper, the one you walk around all day singing, and just can't get the damn thing out of your head, come what may. Kitty is just fabulous, so willing, so lovely, so co-operative, and such a warm hearted person, and it makes me proud to have artists of this calibre on Centre City Records. She delights us with a sweet, playful 60s Motown-pastiche "Guessing Games". And yet again, Kitty was discovered by Tahira Jumah. Kitty had been a famous London DJ under the name of Kitty Kat, but once she turned her hand to singing, she excelled and makes a perfect Centre City artist. She has always been known for her bright red dreadlocks, but we decided to go for a more demure and feminine image for her, with a slightly African flavour. Kitty Corbin, along with Jennifer Dee, Verna Francis, Marvin Cotterell, Shenton Dixon and my new male soul group, The Concentrations, represents the new generation of Centre City artists. Thanks to the wonderful Tahira Jumah, who has been scouring England for the best soul talent there is, our new album is a vocal masterpiece, a new hope for the future, and a proof positive that great soul music is far far far from dead and buried. Thankyou my wonderful wonderful Tahira. You have done me proud. The best A&R talent scout there ever was. So yes, this is the absolute first time premiere of another track which I am exclusively unveiling here on YouTube, from the recent album, "Northern Soul 2008", which was just released on June 30th, 2008. It is true to say that I have tried many times in my life to capture that quintessence of what makes a Northern Soul record actually work on the dancefloor, and with records like Sidney Barnes "Standing On Solid Ground" and Chuck Jackson "All Over The World", I certainly hit a popular chord. But this time I have never been more artistically satisfied. Everything about this wonderful new song suggests the magic and energy of the era that I fell in love with as a teenager. Forget the purists - this one has it all. If you can keep your feet still while listening to this, then you must be a country and western fan or something. Play the CD, watch the DVD, and give new Northern Soul a chance this time. Kitty and I co-wrote this fabulous uplifting song with my long time producing partner Clive Scott.

Thankyou my wonderful wonderful Tahira. You have done me proud. The best A&R talent scout there ever was. Tahira found the wonderful Winston Ward, who just simply blew me away with his soulful delivery and ultra cool professional approach. Winston then also found Jennifer Dee and Verna Francis for us, both of whom are as fabulous female singers as I have ever had the honour and pleasure to produce in my life. This is Winston's second track for the new album. His first, "Following The Crowd", has been on YouTube for a few weeks but I decided to give him a bonus track for the DVD because I was so excited to find such a wonderful singer and friend. He utterly tears apart Diana Ross's 1970s clasic "Getting Ready For Love", and totally makes it his own here. So yes, this is the absolute first time premiere of another track which I am exclusively unveiling here on YouTube, from the recent album, "Northern Soul 2008", which was just released on June 30th, 2008. Deanne Keanne makes a fabulous new version of my 1989 Motorcity classic, which finally became a pop hit in 1991, originally sung by an obscure early Motown artist called Frances Nero, who hadn't recorded for twenty three years, a wonderful song called "Footsteps Following Me", which came out on Motorcity Records before it was picked up by my best friend Ralph Tee for Debut Records. I first found Deanne last year to record a song which I wrote with Damon Rochfort back in 1993 called "Right Place Wrong Time", which Soren Jensen kept telling me I should redo, and which ended up becoming the most outrageous video we have ever made. Deanne makes her living as a Diana Ross impersonator, and has toured America and won awards. The song was written by me and Damon Rochfort and Aron Friedman, way back in 1993, for an artist called Dee Jacobee, who was signed to Mercury. Dee was a wonderful Disco Diva but her records never came out. Fourteen years later, and Soren Jensen, when learning we were doing "Disco 2008", said we simply had to use that song and re-record it from scratch. I always pictured Diana Ross singing it, and the great lady has always been the artist I have most wanted to produce all my life. Well I might not be getting my wish, but Deanne came pretty damn close. So here's our second recording with her. This song takes what was basically a great soul song that appealed to both Northern Soul and Disco audiences, and gives it new life. Deanne redid this particular song for the iconic album, "Yesterday And Tomorrow", which is probably the most dear to my heart project that I have ever undertaken. I decided after thirty three years since I made my very first record, "Reaching For The Best" by The Exciters, to take a trip back down memory lane and recut thirty of my classics on artists who I am currently working with, reinterpreting them in 2008 without losing the magic that made them special in the first place. It's a totally self indulgent project, but one which already has my fans salivating with delight. I first got the idea when I recut Evelyn Thomas's wonderful classic "Have A Little Faith In Me" with Ebony Alleyne, last year. So I'm doing thirty in total, twenty four for the CD and six more extra ones for the DVD, picking either my biggest hits, my most beloved tracks, or the songs which people most requested to see a video. As I must clearly explain, these are not the original versions. And that's what makes the project exciting and new. These are brand spanking new interpretaions of the classics, by Centre City's current roster of artists , built up over a thirty three year career of making records. REACHING FOR THE BEST - WEAK SPOT - YOUR MAGIC PUT A SPELL ON ME - BABY I'M STILL THE SAME MAN - HE'S SO IRREPLACEABLE - MY HEAD'S IN THE STARS - NO WAY OUT - LOOKS LIKE LOVE IS HERE TO STAY - I'M IN WONDERLAND- TWENTY FOUR HOURS A DAY - MY CLAIM TO FAME - TRUE LOVE IS MY DESTINY - NEVER LET GO - NEW YORK'S ON FIRE - SO MANY MEN SO LITTLE TIME - HIGH ENERGY - HE'S A SAINT HE'S A SINNER - ON A CROWDED STREET - CLOSE TO PERFECTION - ALL OVER THE WORLD - MY HEART KEEPS BEATING FASTER - TECHNICOLOUR - FOOTSTEPS FOLLOWING ME - I FOUND HEAVEN - MORE TO THIS WORLD - FAN THE FLAME - I CAN'T ERASE THE THOUGHTS OF YOU - DANCING ON THE EDGE OF A DREAM - RUNNING IN ANOTHER DIRECTION - WALKING ON AIR. The album, "Yesterday And Tomorrow" was released on March 3rd on Centre City Records, exclusively through the new website, http://www.ianlevine.co.uk - and I hope you will all consider supporting it. Angelo Starr makes a fabulous new version of my 1976 Disco classic, originally sung so won
Angelo Starr makes a fabulous new version of my 1976 Disco classic, originally sung so wonderfully by the late great James Wells, called "Baby I'm Still The Same Man", which came out on Polydor Records in 1976, and was also my very first ever twelve inch disc. There are very few singers around who can do justice to that particular jewel in my crown, because of the amazing vocal performance of the original. But even more importantly, when I go into the recording studio with Angelo Starr to make a new record, my greatest possible aspiration could only ever be to try to make a record as good as this. For me it is simple pure perfection. It encapsulates, in one three minute song, everything I have ever wanted to achieve musically my entire life, and I am truly satisfied with it. Of course, Angelo is the brother of the late great Edwin Starr, is managed by Edwin's manager, Lillian Kyle, and is simply the epitome of a classic soul singer. He also leads "The Team", who used to be Edwin's backing group, and are constantly performing up and down the country. Angelo's first tracks with me, "Stand On My Own Two Feet", and "Non Stop Destination", made everyone sit up and take notice. And also this fabulous and talented man was just the perfect voice to feature on my utterly fabulous exciting album, "Disco 2008", with another monster track, "There's A Storm Coming On". He has also done a fantastic song for my recent album, "Northern Soul 2008", called "Don't Leave Me Stranded". But this song takes what was basically a great soul song that appealed to both Northern Soul and Disco audiences, and gives it new life. Angelo redid this particular song for the iconic album, "Yesterday And Tomorrow", which is probably the most dear to my heart project that I have ever undertaken. Voices With Soul make a fabulous new version of my 1993 Christmas pop hit, originally sung
Voices With Soul make a fabulous new version of my 1993 Christmas pop hit, originally sung so wonderfully by Bad Boys Inc, called "Walking On Air", which came out on A&M Records. Voices With Soul are an amazing group, which is made up of Grace, Hildia and Corene Campbell from Luton, who started off singing as the Praise and Worship Team of their local Church. They had been singing together as a group for 6 months before entering Simon Cowell's UK talent show, "The X-Factor", which is our version of American Idol. However Grace and Hildia had been singing together for a number of years, then Corene joined them. Prior to the X-Factor show Grace was training to be a bus driver and was a qualified hairdresser. Hildia was an IT Student and an independent solo artist. She sang alongside a number of well-known artists such as Chaka Khan and Depeche Mode. Corene was a University Student studying Advertising & Marketing Communications. She was also a supervisor at work and a play worker. The group made the top six of the first series of the show, and Simon loved them and kept them in the show when it fell down to his choice as to who should leave that week. Since exiting the X Factor show, Voices With Soul have been on a tour around the UK with G4 and have been up and down the country performing at various gigs and venues. And working with me too, making lots of tracks with the group, as well as two solo songs on Hildia back in 2006, for the "Solid Ground" album. But this song takes what was basically a great soul song but never appreciated as such because it was done by a boy band, and gives it new life. The Divas rule once again. They redid this particular song for the iconic "Yesterday And Tomorrow" album, because there are very few singers around who can do justice to that particular jewel in my crown. So yes, my 2008 album, "Yesterday And Tomorrow", from where this song comes, is probably the most dear to my heart project that I have ever undertaken. Coming in October 2008, a tremendously exciting project for Northern Soul fans everywhere.
Coming in October 2008, a tremendously exciting project for Northern Soul fans everywhere. We've done a deal with Wienerworld, a major music DVD company, and the same company who originally released our classic documentary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul", and we are now doing the definitive DVD box set. A five disc set of 200 performances called "Northern Soul's Greatest 200 Floorfillers". This uses some songs from "The Strange World Of Northern Soul" which are completely re-edited, so they look fresh and sparkling new. All the previous video effects done in the 1990s are gone forever, consigned to history. Plus loads and loads of never before seen videos, many of which have sat in the can untouched for many many years. Plus some newly recorded tributes to the classics. If you ever went to Blackpool Mecca or Wigan Casino, this is the must-have purchase of the year. This is the legendary and beautiful Maxine Brown singing "One In A Million", which was yet another legendary Northern Soul smash, that we filmed for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". This is a piece of classic 1960s New York which epitomised the early days of Blackpool Mecca, championed by Tony Jebb back in the very early days of the Highland Room, way back in 1971 and 1972, prior to the Torch opening. It still sounds great but has been much forgotten and neglected over the years. It was a piece of Motownesque joyful exhuberance on the Wand label, owned by Florence Greenberg, from 1965, that golden year, and as fine a piece of Northern Soul as you could ever wish to hear. And the very quintessence of the mid Sixties. We recut it in 1998 when we were filming our marathon six disc, twenty four hour massive documentary about the entire history of the Northern Soul scene, which contained 131 specially recorded performances of all the classics, and is still available on a six disc box set from Wienerworld. So, we tracked down Maxine Brown in New York, and filmed the lovely lady, and she was more than happy to make this one and only one-time performance especially for us, for our ground breaking Encyclopedia Britannica of Northern Soul, and I am so glad that we did.
