Aortal are a new Dublin three piece fronted by James O' Toole on guitar and vocals with Conor Friel on bass and Brian Shanahan on drums. This exciting new act combines striking vocals and visuals with the energy of a pumping heart.
Everything about James suggests that in the eyes of today's society he is a spectacular failure! Born and raised in the Dublin Council flats Fatima Mansions but gifted with an extraordinary voice and an amazing vocal range James is very much a product of his environment. Taking his rare vocal gift he has absorbed these influences and reflects them in a vocal ability that is sometimes soft and vulnerable, sometimes raw and venomous.
As a deserter from the industrial army James has continued to fulfil the destiny that fate has given him by happily being a failure. A failure that has survived for seven years on nothing other than whatever he can earn on the streets with his voice and guitar. A failure that has made it to India and back. Playing and singing while lying on his back on a bus rooftop bouncing its ways through the Himalayas. A failure that has made it to South Africa twice, the anti globalisation marches in Evian in 2003 to London, Germany and Sweden all on the talent of his voice alone.
Playing covers in the street, not for notoriety or for the pursuit of pleasure, but because he has to eat, James has spent his time crafting and developing his own unique and original material. In failing to conform to the expectations of society and dissenting with a smile, James has won the time to develop himself as a musician. A precious time that few others ever get. There have been good times and friends made, crowds and busking on sunny days. But weeks of rain, no money and no hope coupled with the violence that is an everyday reality of playing on the streets has left James with his nose broken twice and his teeth kicked in.
It was while recording a solo album that James met Conor Friel. There was an immediate connection between all three members and as accomplished musicians and sound engineers in their own right Conor and Brian began to work with James refining his sound and playing, engineering and producing this early material. From this collaboration was born Aortal so called after the aortal artery in the heart. Aortal is a beating revolutionary core pumping life from the left! Conor brings a punk pop sensibility to the sound and his on stage banter and interaction with the crowd provide the perfect foil to the intensity of James' vocal performance. Brian provides that solid and infectious beat that underlies and defines the tempo of the band. It is this professional musicianship and ease of communication with each other and the crowd from the stage which combine to make Aortal one of the most exciting emerging live acts in Ireland today. They will leave you howling for more....

Heute heißt es tapfer sein, und das liegt nicht an dem Umstand, dass die Längs Lesebühne auf die Zielgerade einbiegt. Mit Sicherheit auch nicht daran, dass die Bahnfühligkeit auf dem Zettel steht, die auf unterwegs über Uelzen nach Hamburg Völker und Vollidioten ihrer Verständigung näher bringt. Nein, wo die Sonne heute auf die Reeperbahn prallt, trifft's die Leseabordnung wolkenbruchartig von oben. Und wie! Trotzdem halten die drei sich Tapfer unterm Schirm fest und lauschen Jörg Schwedler. Der das, abgesehen von der akuten Ertrinkunsgefahr, auch eigentlich einfach macht. Wie die zwei Vorsprecher bereits auch schon, nur eben als Finale. Aber seht selbst!

Raised on the waters of the muddy Mississippi between Jonesboro, Arkansas and Nashville, TN, Justin Black has played show after show finally storming upon Ireland's famous Derry City Walls. 23 year old Justin incorparates the sound and lyrics of Jazz, Blues, Folk, Rock, and even R&B into his writings. Justin currently records his originals with producer/artist Paddy Nixon at Music Shack Studio's in Derry/Londonderry, Ireland. Justin is teaming up with hit artist Luan Parle to record a duet and Zavvi/Virgin Records will be spocering the release of Justin's new single; "Little Miss Naked You".

Part zwei unseres Mini-Lesefestivals der Längs Lesebühne, heute an der Reihe Thomas Nast. Das Thema? Tapeziertische voller Müll, kotzende Vorortler, blondierte Brasilianerinnen und besoffene Halbintelligente. Wer bei dieser Reihung nicht sofort mit dem Stichwort Osterstraßenfest kontert, kann einfach noch nicht da gewesen sein, denn: ja, genau so sieht's aus. Was natürlich nicht bedeutet, dass Lars nicht auch schon seinen eigenen Tapeziertisch voll unnützer Reliqien aufgeschlagen und sich eingereiht hat ins Osterstraßenfest. Denn einmal im Jahr muss man sich einfach vorführen, dass man selber wider besseres Wissen nicht der Vollste, Halbintelligenteste und Prolligste von allen ist. Das funktioniert allemal. Kein Jahr müsst ihr mehr warten um mehr vom Trio zu hören. Morgen geht's in die Finalrunde und hier in die Verlängerung:

From fist-pumping, guitar-driven anthems to slow-burning, passionate pieces, Dublin rock band Relief are sure to make a major impact on the world music scene. The band release their 5-track debut E.P. 'Nine Points' soon, offering an exciting snapshot of a dynamic band with a dynamic sound. The music of Relief is the fruit of a lifelong friendship between songwriter and guitarist Botham Hawkins and classically-trained organist and bassist Aaron Marchant. Freshly formed in 2007, Relief have wasted no time in making their mark, and have already done extensive recording in New York's world-famous Avatar Studios and Dublin's K9 Studios. Botham Hawkins and Aaron Marchant united with drummer Craig Robinson in early 2008 to complete and concrete the line-up. In their own words, ''Relief has arrived''

Zeit dem musikalischen Treiben auf Balkonien mal wieder eine kurze Pause zu gönnen und den Scheinwerfer vom gesungenen auf's gesprochene Wort zu schwenken. Dabei heraus kommen heute Déjà-vu-Bilder am laufenden Meter: ein knackiges Sammelsurium der Schanzen-Läden, in denen wir uns alle schon einmal so daneben benommen haben, dass wir für unbestimmte Zeit ein unausgesprochenes Hausverbot beklagen dürfen. Wie solche Blamagen im Einzelnen aussehen können beobachtet heute Liefka, die Part eins der Längs Lesebühnenrunde übernimmt. Drei Autoren mit passgenauen Texten, mal lustig oder politisch oder unkorrekt, immer aber treffend. Campari-O ist der Startschuss für das Mini-Lesefestival auf Balkonien. Wenn nicht im Regen über der Reeperbahn gibt es das Trio jeden zweiten Samstag in der Mathilde-Bar in der Bornstraße und jeden vierten Donnerstag in heute skizziertem Ambiente im Kulturhaus 73 auf dem Schulterblatt. After many months of sonic construction and underground whispering, Dublin's Stand released their fourth album proper, "Travel Light" onto the world last November. Sessions were booked. Release dates were nudged. Tracks were pulled apart limb from limb and put back together in novel ways. What emerged can only be described as their strongest body of songs to date.
Mr. Walsh wore the producer hat, sifting through the do's and dont's, letting the songs core breathe, giving a fine "Slan" (Goodbye) to tiresome layering. The melodies carry the weight. This album finds Neil and Alan in fine voice.
Michael McCoy made sure tracks didn't need redoing because the kick drum microphone was left unplugged. Chief engineer of the Hit Factory in NY, his craft, humour and tendency to 18hour sessions kept spirits afloat.
The venues: Buffalo, Rhinebeck, Manhattan, NYC and Lexington KY. Work started in a northern blizzard and finished under a southern sun.
A departure from the guitar based work of their 2004 work Transmissions, Stand are feverishly proud of the songs recorded here and as always, are working them out on the road as the van barrels on down the highway. Developing their songs and moving records from the van and their NYC headquarters, these four very different guys, in the most magical way of the best bands to do so before them, merge into one upon taking the stage.

Mit unserem heutigen Balkongast hat es einen echten Allrounder über die Reeperbahn verschlagen: Tex hat nämlich seine Gitarre eingepackt und das große Berlin gegen unseren kleinen Balkon getauscht. Der Hauptstädter hat „Der Himmel ist ein Dachgeschoss" mitgebracht, natürlich passend zum Balkonambiente und obendrein akustisch bemerkenswert: Spielerische Leichtigkeit gepaart mit melancholischer Schwere, gutes Songwriting eingerahmt von eingängiger Melodie, alles dem Himmel ganz nah. Wenn Tex nicht gerade die Gitarre schultert, rührt er in vielen anderen Töpfen, die alle irgendwie mit Kunst und Musik gefüllt sind -- ob in Mutimediakunstprojekten oder auf der Couch in einem Kreuzberger Café. Da entsteht TV Noir, eine zweiwöchentliche Songwriter Wochenschau mit illustren Gästen und Livemusik. Das ganze ist so empfehlenswert, dass wir uns die Sendung im September auch einmal selbst vor Ort anschauen werden. Bis dahin könnt ihr ja schon einmal einen Blick riskieren:

Liz Is Evil - formed in 2005 this 3 piece played a handful of gigs as 'Roman Empire' with Liam 'The Scag' Cagney and Tonto Lanigan on bass. Deforming under the name Liz Is Evil in 2006 the band returns with more tales of rural woe, urban observations, minor triumphs, paganism and anti-psychiatry!
