From 1995's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness this is 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins but played in the Moby Dance Remix (Moby is a very known worldwide DJ, songwriter, musician & singer). hope you ll enjoy with this classic Electronic~ psychedelic version from 90s middle. :)
Review.- The Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band that formed in Chicago in 1988. While the group has gone through several lineup changes, The Smashing Pumpkins consisted of Billy Corgan (vocals/guitar), James Iha (guitar/vocals), D'arcy Wretzky (bass/vocals), and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums/percussion) for most of the band's recording career.
Disavowing the punk rock roots shared by many of their alt-rock contemporaries, the Pumpkins have a diverse, densely layered, and guitar-heavy sound, containing elements of gothic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, shoegazer-style production and, in later recordings, electronica.
The Smashing Pumpkins broke into the musical mainstream with their second album, 1993's Siamese Dream. The group built their audience with extensive touring and their follow-up, 1995's double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. With approximately 18.3 million albums sold in the United States alone as of 2006, The Smashing Pumpkins were one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands of the 1990s.
Corgan worked nonstop over the next year and wrote, according to statements in interviews, about fifty-six songs for the next album. Following this spell of concentrated creativity, the Pumpkins went back into the studio with producers Flood and Alan Moulder to work on what Corgan described as "The Wall for Generation X", a comparison with Pink Floyd's famous two-LP concept album.
The result was Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, a double album featuring twenty-eight songs and lasting over two hours (the vinyl version of the album contained three records, two extra songs, and an alternate tracklisting). The songs were intended to hang together conceptually as a symbol of the cycle of life and death. Praised by Time as "the group's most ambitious and accomplished work yet", Mellon Collie debuted at number one on the Billboard charts in October 1995. Even more successful than Siamese Dream, it was certified nine times platinum in the United States and became the best-selling double album of the decade to date. It also garnered seven 1997 Grammy Award nominations, including Album of the Year. The band won only the Best Hard Rock Performance award, for the album's lead single "Bullet with Butterfly Wings". The album spawned five singles—"Bullet with Butterfly Wings", "1979", "Zero", "Tonight, Tonight", and "Thirty-Three"—of which the first three were certified gold and all but "Zero" entered the Top 40. Many of the remaining songs that did not make it onto Mellon Collie were released as B-sides to the singles, and were eventually compiled in The Aeroplane Flies High box set. As a testament to the band's popularity, Virgin Records originally intended to limit the set to 200,000 copies, but produced more after the original run sold out due to overwhelming demand.
In 1996, the Pumpkins embarked on an extended world tour in support of Mellon Collie. Corgan's look during this period—a shaved head, a longsleeve black shirt with the word "Zero" printed on it, and silver pants—became iconic. That year, the band also made a guest appearance in an episode of The Simpsons, "Homerpalooza". With considerable video rotation on MTV, major industry awards, and "Zero" shirts selling in many malls, the Pumpkins were considered one of the most popular bands of the time. But the year was far from entirely positive for the band. In May, the Smashing Pumpkins played a gig at The Point Theatre in Dublin, Ireland. The venue was overcrowded and despite the band's repeated requests for moshing to stop, a seventeen-year-old fan named Bernadette O'Brien was crushed to death. The concert ended early and the following night's performance in Belfast was cancelled out of respect for her. However, while Corgan maintained that moshing's "time [had] come and gone", the band would continue to request open-floor concerts throughout the rest of the tour.

From 1987s "Kick" this is the fourth smash "Never Tear Us Apart" by one of my fav all time band "INXS" in my own video-remix tribute called as "Lush Trance Mix" enjoyed from the rare Tall Paul vs Inxs Remixes Promo released in 2001 and obviously played with the original version. This isn't the white label remix, it's such an electronic and trance remix but cut before the dance part (only put the soft part for keep the original beat of this wonderful ballad) ... So, R.I.P. Michael...this is principally for you.
Review Michael Hutchence era.- INXS (pronounced "In Excess") is an Australian rock group. The band was formed on 16 August 1977, in Sydney, Australia.
INXS began under the name The Farriss Brothers but the band changed it just prior to the release of their self-titled début album in 1980, INXS, which featured "Just Keep Walking," their first Australian hit single. Its follow-up, 1981's Underneath the Colours (produced by Richard Clapton), became a hit-album in Australia.
The band's worldwide peak of popularity came with 1987's Kick, an upbeat, confident album that yielded four Top-10 US singles and several international hits, including "New Sensation", "Never Tear Us Apart", "Devil Inside", and the #1 "Need You Tonight". They toured heavily behind the album throughout 1987 and 1988. The video for the 1987 INXS track "Mediate" (which played after the video for "Need You Tonight") duplicated the format of Bob Dylan's video for "Subterranean Homesick Blues," even in its use of apparently deliberate errors.
In 1989 Hutchence made an album with Max Q, which received decent reviews, but at best attained a cult status. The rest of the band also took a break to work on side projects, but soon returned to the studio to record their follow-up album titled X. However, the band had a lot of pressure on its shoulders due to fans and critics alike having high expectations about the follow-up album to Kick. In 1990, INXS released X. It followed in the same vein as Kick, and added harmonica to some songs, but critics and fans considered it a weak follow-up. Nevertheless, X did score two hits in Suicide Blonde and "Disappear" (both Top-10 in the US), and was a Top-5 hit album internationally.
INXS performed at Wembley Stadium on July 13, 1991, during their "Summer XS" tour stop in London to a sold out audience of 72,000 fans. During this show, INXS organized a film crew to shoot their show onto video to come out simultaneously as their live album Live Baby Live (the video was also called Live Baby Live). Note: Name is said Live (as in "to live your life") Baby Live (as in a live performance).
1992's Welcome to Wherever You Are was an experimental album using sitars and a 60-piece orchestra while adding a much more "raw" sound to their music. It received critical reviews and went number one in the UK & Sweden and number two in Switzerland, but had difficulty finding an audience in the U.S.
1993's Full Moon, Dirty Hearts received mixed reviews and included a track called "Please (You Got That)" which featured the legendary Ray Charles and title track with The Pretenders Chrissie Hynde. The band made a full video album for the record using unknown Australian students to direct with help by Richard Lowenstein. Full Moon, Dirty Hearts was the last record under INXS' contract with Atlantic. The band took time off to rest and be with their families. Michael Hutchence remained in the public eye through modeling and film acting. His personal life included dating several models and public personalities including Kylie Minogue, Helena Christensen and Paula Yates. Throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, INXS was a major force in Australian popular music, leading the way into worldwide popularity for several Australian bands. The band worked closely with several other Australian artists, such as The Models and Jenny Morris, helping to establish their careers. By the mid-nineties, however, their popularity had waned, especially in the US, where their Greatest Hits compilation failed to reach the Top-100. (At the 1996 BRIT Awards, Michael Hutchence presented Oasis with an award, after which their characteristically arrogant vocalist Liam Gallagher remarked "Has-beens shouldn't be presenting awards to gonna-bes".) In 1997, the group released a comeback album titled Elegantly Wasted, which garnered mixed reviews. It fared respectably in Australia, Canada, France, Great Britain (where INXS had ironically more success in the 90s than in the 80s), Sweden and Switzerland. On 22 November 1997, Hutchence was found dead in a Sydney hotel room under suspicious circumstances. Some speculate his death was actually an accident, the result of autoerotic asphyxiation death.

1986's march #1 smash hit "These Dreams" by Heart in the rare Extended remix released as P
1986's march #1 smash hit "These Dreams" by Heart in the rare Extended remix released as Promo only in Canada and USA during 1986. This is my own video-remix tribute for the sisters Wilson, the legends of modern rock...you can note about Ann and Nancy's sweetest side here, including their awesomes voices. (please don't forget about their currently tour!!!)
Review since 1983 .- Heart is a rock band that came out of Bellevue (a suburb of Seattle, Washington), and Vancouver, British Columbia. Going through several lineup changes, the only constant members of the group are sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson.[1] The group rose to fame in the 1970s with their music being influenced by hard rock as well as folk music. After diminishing in popularity by the mid-eighties, the band created a major comeback in 1985, experiencing further success with their power ballads throughout the rest of the decade. By the mid-1990s, Heart left their eighties sound and went back to their hard rock roots which they continue to play today. They have sold over 30 million albums worldwide. Following the release of Private Audition in 1982, Fossen and Derosier left the band. Both Private Audition and 1983's Passionworks, (featuring new bassist Mark Andes and new drummer Denny Carmassi), failed to go gold, putting Heart at a career crossroads.
In 1984, Ann Wilson recorded a duet with Mike Reno of Loverboy called "Almost Paradise". The song was featured on the soundtrack of the movie Footloose and hit number 7 on the pop charts. Then, the group's first album for Capitol, simply titled Heart (#1, 1985), sold five million copies on the strength of four Top-10 hits: "What About Love?" (#10, 1985), "Never" (#4, 1985), "These Dreams" (#1, 1986), and "Nothin' at All" (#10, 1986). By that time, the group had abandoned their earlier hard-rock aspirations to make slick, radio-friendly pop.
In June 1986, Nancy Wilson married journalist, screenwriter, and director Cameron Crowe; she had made a cameo appearance in his movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982. Bad Animals (#2, 1987), too, contained a chart-topper, in the power ballad "Alone", as well as "Who Will You Run To?" (#7, 1987), and "There's the Girl" (#12, 1987).
In 1989, Ann Wilson and Cheap Trick's Robin Zander had a #6 hit with their duet "Surrender to Me." Brigade (#3, 1990) became Heart's sixth multi-platinum LP and added three more Top-25 hits to its catalogue, the most notable of which was "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You". Following a 1990 tour, the Wilson sisters put together an informal acoustic group called The Lovemongers with Sue Ennis and Frank Cox; a four-song EP that included a version of Led Zeppelin's "Battle of Evermore" came out in late 1992, and the quartet performed several times in the Seattle area. The Lovemongers released a full-length album titled Whirlygig in 1997.
When Heart re-emerged with Desire Walks On (#48) in 1993, Mark Andes had left the band and Shuyler Deale played the bass. For the group's subsequent tour, Heart was joined by bassist Fernando Saunders and drummer Denny Fongheiser (replacing Deale and Carmassi). The band offered live acoustic versions of its best-known songs on 1995's The Road Home, which was produced by Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones.
The pared-down format echoed Heart's low profile in the late 1990s. Of the two sisters, Nancy kept busier, scoring her husband's movies, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, and Elizabethtown, and releasing a solo album ("Live at McCabe's Guitar Shop") in 1999. That same year, she and Ann embarked on a tour of their own, the first time that they had done so. In 2004, the Wilsons released Jupiter's Darling, their first studio album as Heart since 1993. It features a variety of songs that include a return to Heart's original sound, as well as a blend of pop and new textures. Stand-out tracks include "Make Me", "Enough", "Oldest Story In The World" and "Lost Angel". In 2005, the Wilsons appeared on the CMT Music Awards as a special guest of Gretchen Wilson (no relation), and performed the Heart classic, "Crazy On You" with Gretchen. Heart performed again with Gretchen on VH-1's tribute to the band, Decades Rock Live. The special also featured Alice in Chains, Phil Anselmo, Dave Navarro, Rufus Wainwright and Carrie Underwood. Heart was honored at the second annual VH1 Rock Honors (24 May 2007), and also performed, along with Ozzy Osbourne, Genesis and ZZ Top. This, along with the inclusion of "Crazy on You" in Guitar Hero II and "Barracuda" in the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock video game, renewed interest in the band. In September 2007, Ann released her first solo album Hope & Glory.

From 1984's She's So Unusual this is the Smash-hit debuted and later worldwide major hit "
From 1984's She's So Unusual this is the Smash-hit debuted and later worldwide major hit "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper. this is my second video-remix tribute about the diva, called as "Fun with V Knutsn Discotech Mix". It contains the "US -Dub / Instrumental mix" and also, the rare 12" maxi-single released as Promo (1984) in Germany called as "Fun with V Knutsn Mix". well... you know, Fun with Cyndi forever... :)
Details about Girls Just Want to Have Fun success.- "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" was the first major single released by singer Cyndi Lauper as a solo artist. It gained renown as a feminist anthem, an award winning video and a world-wide smash hit.
With the inclusion of promotional releases, the single has seen over 38 individual versions of release. The most common was a 7" vinyl single (with varying cover artwork) released in 1983/1984 (depending on the country), with the second most common being a 12" vinyl single (also with varying cover artwork) released in 1983/1984.
The song was written by Robert Hazard, who recorded his version of the song in 1979. The song was originally written from a male point of view. For Lauper's version, she changed the lyrics slightly to allow it to be performed by a female and Hazard approved the minor changes. Her version appeared on her 1983 debut solo record, She's So Unusual. It is a synthesizer-backed anthem about the roles of women in society and is considered by many to be a feminist classic of the era.
Originally run on late-night MTV as a novel, inside-industry joke, the video quickly went into heavy rotation and wound up as 1984's "Video of the Year". It has been covered on either an album or in live concert by over 30 other artists including but not limited to Pearl Jam, Greg Laswell, John Mayer, "Weird Al" Yankovic (as "Girls Just Want to Have Lunch"), Alvin and the Chipmunks, Cybill Shepherd, Lolly, Triple Image, Dandy Warhols, David Rawlings, The Ordinary Boys and Cam'ron. Recently, the Mexican band Los Horoscopos de Durango released a Duranguense version of the song and a Spanish version, Sólo Quiero Bailar (I Just Want To Dance). A version was recorded by The Cheetah Girls was recorded, however, the single was cancelled, and was cut from their forthcoming album.
The variety of releases of the single includes an Austrian birthday card with a 3" CD of the song included inside. The song has been heavily distributed in karaoke version as well. Lauper would later go on to completely re-work the song in 1994 resulting in the new hit "Hey Now (Girls Just Want To Have Fun)". The song was remade by Lauper yet again in 2005 on her The Body Acoustic album, also produced by Chertoff and Wittman with Lauper, with guest support vocals from Japanese pop/rock duo Puffy AmiYumi.
The release of the single was accompanied by a quirky music video produced in Mother Studio in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and still is unmistakable for the snake-dance scenes through New York streets and crashing a giant party.
The single reached number one in over ten countries, as well as reaching the top ten in over fifteen different countries: #1 in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Israel, Japan (the number one position was held on Oricon's International singles chart; on the main Oricon singles chart, it peaked at number 17, which is still exceptional for a non-Japanese artist), New Zealand and Norway, in addition it several other countries; number two in the United States, and United Kingdom; number three in Austria, the Netherlands and South Africa; and number six in Germany and Switzerland.
- "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" can be heard in the first flashback of The Simpsons episode "Lisa's First Word"; Homer even sings it. The "The Simpsons" named an episode with a reference to this song (Girls Just Want to Have Sums) -
The vibrant talent of Cyndi Lauper has graced our world for 25 years. Beginning in 1980 Cyndi and her band at the time, Blue Angel released a self-title album but in 1983 as many artist do, Cyndi decided to depart the group and take on the world as a solo artist. It was in 1984 with the release of her debut album, She's So Unusual that Cyndi scored massive success - 9 millon copies sold worldwide -- and quite literally became an overnight success, She's So Unusual was the first debut album by a solo artist to garner four top five singles: "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", "Time After Time", "She Bop" and "All Trough The Night". She's So Unusual earned Cyndi a Grammy award for "Best New Artist". And this was just the beginning...

1987's #1 Highest hit "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" by the diva Whitney Houson. This called as "Ultimate Dance Remix", but really I used for enjoy on the original Maxi-single these versions: "12inch Extended Remix", "Acapella", "Dub Mix" & obviously the "Ultimix" remix in addition for my own job. hope you'll really enjoy with "The Voice". :)
Review until Whitney album.- Whitney Elizabeth Houston (born August 9, 1963) is an iconic, Grammy award-winning American R&B singer, actress, film producer, and former model. She is the third and youngest child of John and Cissy Houston.
She was raised a Baptist, but was also exposed to the Pentecostal church. As a teenager, she attended a Roman Catholic single-sex high school, Mount Saint Dominic Academy. Houston's mother Cissy, her first cousin (Dionne Warwick), and godmother (Aretha Franklin) are all notable figures in the gospel music, rhythm and blues and soul music genres. Whitney is well-known for her powerful vocals, melismatic vocal inflections, and expansive vocal range. Before her collapse in front of the public eye, Houston was one of a few black artists to receive heavy rotation on MTV in the 1980s during a male rock dominated time, in the network's early years. AOL Black Voices said "Though her success seemed like a lightening rod, it was always validated by Whitney's polished and powerful vocal abilities - making her known as "The Voice".
She is the only female artist to have two albums in the top 35 best selling albums in the US, and is the only artist to have a record seven consecutive Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit singles. Houston is considered one of the 100 most fascinating black women of the 20th century according to Ebony magazine.
With production from Michael Masser, Kashif, Jermaine Jackson and Narada Michael Walden, Houston's self-titled 1985 debut album was released in February of 1985 and initially sold modestly while failing to make in impact. The plan was to first appeal to a black audience, hence the release of the lead single, the soulful "You Give Good Love", which peaked at #3 on the U.S..Billboard Hot 100 while going #1 on the R&B Charts. As a result, the album began selling and climbing the charts. With success on the R&B Charts, Davis wanted Houston to crossover to a broader audience. She began performing on popular night shows that usually weren't open to many black acts. The follow-up singles, "Saving All My Love for You", "How Will I Know", which would introduce her to the MTV audience, and "Greatest Love of All" all peaked at number one on the pop singles chart and would help establish a crossover base.
By 1986, a year after its initial release, Whitney Houston topped the Billboard 200 album chart and stayed there for 14 consecutive weeks. It became an international success, selling over thirteen million copies in the United States alone —making it the best-selling debut album of all time by a female artist. To date, the album has sold approximately 25 million copies worldwide. The album received mainly positive reviews. Many praised the new voice with Rolling Stone calling her "one of the most exciting new voices in years" The same year, Houston launched her first headlining tour called The Greatest Love Tour. The 89 date tour was the sixth highest grossing tour of the year with $20.1 million. Because of her duet "Hold Me" in 1984, Houston was ineligible for 'Best New Artist' at the 1986 Grammys. Many felt it was unfair because she the award was hers to lose. However, she did win her first Grammy award for "Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female" for "Saving All My Love for You".
Houston's second album, Whitney, was released in June 1987. Following the same formula as her debut, the album featured productions from Masser, Kashif and Walden again, as well as Jellybean Benitez. It became the first album in history by a female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 in the US and the UK album chart, as well as topping the charts in several countries around the world. The album's first four singles, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)", "Didn't We Almost Have It All", "So Emotional", and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" all peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100—which brought her a total of seven consecutive Hot 100 number-one hits; breaking the record of six previously shared by The Beatles and The Bee Gees. The album's fifth, and final single, "Love Will Save the Day" also peaked in the Top 10 on the Hot 100. However, unlike her previous album, neither song topped the R&B Charts. Whitney was certified nine times platinum in America, and has sold approximately 20 million worldwide. Many critics complained that the material was too similar to her previous album and also felt that Houston was holding back her gospel roots for mainstream pop music.

1995's worldwide successful hit "Missing" by Everything But The Girl in my own video remix
1995's worldwide successful hit "Missing" by Everything But The Girl in my own video remix called as "Hot Wicked Vocal Mix" . Hope you'll enjoy it and note about Tracey's perfect voice. :)
Review.- Everything but the Girl (EBTG) is a English two-person band formed in Hull in 1982.
The band's members are the lead singer and sometime-guitarist Tracey Thorn (born September 26, 1962) Guitarist, keyboardist & vocalist Ben Watt (born December 6, 1962).
E.B.T.G.'s debut single, a cover version of Cole Porter's "Night and Day", was released in June 1982. Following steady sales and exposure from the Pillows & Prayers compilation album, the single was re-issued in August 1983. Their first album was released in 1984 in the UK as Eden. 1984 also saw the UK release of singles "Mine", and "Native Land". Their first UK hit single, "Each and Every One", had a jazzy sound, and E.B.T.G. was considered part of the jazz/pop movement known as sophisti-pop that included other British acts like Sade, Matt Bianco, and The Style Council, on whose Café Bleu album they guested. E.B.T.G. and Sade both worked with producer Robin Millar and engineers Ben Rogan and Mike Pela for their debut albums.
Although Eden was released in the UK, a different recording, Everything But the Girl, was released in the United States. The U.S. release contained about half the tracks from "Eden", along with some different tracks, including 'Mine' and 'Native Land'. The U.S. release balanced the bossa nova stylings of the British version with a more folk rock aesthetic, helping to establish the group's eclectic musicality.
Subsequent releases underscored E.B.T.G.'s versatility and range. Their 1985 album Love Not Money featured a shimmering pop sound with jangly guitars, and included a cover version of The Pretenders' song "Kid" (not on the UK L.P.). The lyrics have strong social and political content. "Angel" comments upon child poverty and public attitudes towards it. "Sean" is a bitter comment on the Northern Ireland troubles. "Ugly Little Dreams" comments upon male attitudes to intelligent women and is dedicated to actress Frances Farmer. "Angel" was also released as a single in the UK.
The following year they released the self-produced Baby the Stars Shine Bright, an album of original pop songs recorded with an orchestra. They revealed the album's inspiration by their choices of B-sides for its single releases: one finds songs from Bacharach and Jimmy Webb on the 12" versions (as well as a cover of Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces"). The first single was "Come On Home", followed by "Don't Leave Me Behind". While the jump from jazz to post-Smiths rock (with the release of Love Not Money) may have jarred some of their audience, the move to orchestral pop was much bolder and foretold the stylistic swap they'd make ten years later with Walking Wounded.
In 1988, E.B.T.G. released Idlewild, a collection of mature songs that began a trend towards middle-of-the-road, adult-orientated contemporary music. A cover version of Danny Whitten's "I Don't Want to Talk About It" (previously a hit by Rod Stewart) was released as a non-L.P. single; it achieved a high UK chart position and was later added to the album. Around this time, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions asked Tracey to contribute vocals to the song "Big Snake" on their final studio album Mainstream.
Tommy Lipuma produced the band's 1990 album The Language of Life. The album, which featured the single "Driving", was another lush pop effort, but with a more contemporary sound. Jazz great Stan Getz contributed a solo. Next came Worldwide, and its single "Old Friends" in 1991. Worldwide's lyrics revolve around the themes of relationships, travel and personal memories.
1992 saw another UK hit single with the release of the Covers E.P. The lead track was "Love Is Strange", and the E.P. featured cover versions of Bruce Springsteen's "Tougher Than the Rest"; Cyndi Lauper's "Time after Time" and Elvis Costello's "Alison". These four tracks were included on the U.S.-only album Acoustic.
In 1993, E.B.T.G. released a cover version of Paul Simon's "The Only Living Boy in New York" as a single in the UK.
The duo were forced to curtail recording and touring for a few years when Watt contracted Churg-Strauss syndrome, an autoimmune disease (he subsequently wrote a memoir, Patient, about his ordeal). The next work of original music was not until 1994, when E.B.T.G. released Amplified Heart. Although most of the music was still acoustic-based, it had a much more contemporary feel. Producer Todd Terry remixed the track "Missing", and when E.B.T.G. released the remix as a single, it became a huge international hit. It hit the top of nearly every chart around the world, and charted in the U.S., a feat that had previously eluded the band. The track reached number two and stayed in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for well over a year.

1997's success debuted-hit "Push" by Matchbox 20.
Review.- Matchbox Twenty (or MB20, MBT, matchbox twenty, originally spelled Matchbox 20) is a rock band formed in Orlando, Florida. The current members of the band are Rob Thomas, Paul Doucette, Brian Yale, and Kyle Cook. (Adam Gaynor (rhythm guitar) left the band in 2005, after performing on their first three studio albums.) Rob Thomas is the principal songwriter and lead singer.
Rob Thomas, Brian Yale, and Paul Doucette performed in the band Tabitha's Secret, which originated in Orlando, Florida, with fellow members John Stanley and John Goff, before splitting to start a new band (what was to become Matchbox Twenty). After recruiting the talents of Adam Gaynor from Criteria Recording Studios in Miami and Kyle Cook from the Atlanta Institute of Music, the lineup was complete and ready to begin.
Paul Doucette came up with the name Matchbox Twenty when he was a waiter in a diner and saw a guy with a number 20 softball shirt. It was covered with patches and the only word they could read was matchbox.
Matchbox Twenty released their debut album, Yourself Or Someone Like You, in 1996. While their first single, "Long Day", was a rock radio-only smash, the album soon spun off several Top 40 hit singles throughout 1997 and 1998, including "Push", "3 A.M.", "Real World", and "Back 2 Good". The album eventually went on to sell over 12 million copies in the U.S. alone, earning diamond status. The band toured relentlessly for several years, performing from the album, along with some cover songs such as Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" and The Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down". Their fan base grew from concert to concert based on their electrifying live performances and the longevity of their hit singles on radio. That same year, Matchbox Twenty recorded a live version of their Top-40 hit "3 AM" for release on the charity album Live in the X Lounge, benefiting cerebral palsy research.
Before recording their second album, Rob Thomas collaborated with Itaal Shur on a song called "Smooth" for Carlos Santana's comeback album, Supernatural. The song had a pop-tinged Latin beat and showcased Thomas' lyrical talents. Thomas was supposed to act solely as songwriter on "Smooth", but Carlos Santana had him sing on it as well after hearing the song's demo recording. "Smooth" was the album's lead single and became a hit in 1999; Thomas earned three Grammys for writing and performing on "Smooth", including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
In 2000, Matchbox 20 renamed themselves Matchbox Twenty and released their second album, Mad Season. The album featured lush instrumental arrangements, and spun off several hit singles, including "Bent" (which went #1 on the Hot 100) and "If You're Gone". The video for "Bent" poked fun of singer Thomas' heightened profile from "Smooth" by showing the other band members assaulting him mercilessly. The evocatively arranged ballad "If You're Gone" became a big hit, especially on adult contemporary formats. The band's next two singles, "Mad Season" and "Last Beautiful Girl" were not as successful.
For their third album, More Than You Think You Are, the band returned to a harder rock sound. Thomas shared the songwriting efforts with the other band members on several songs. The album contained hit singles "Disease", "Unwell", and "Bright Lights". Although it was not as commercially successful as the band's two earlier efforts, it had an enormous radio presence for well over a year, and received a large amount of critical praise.
In May 2004, the band released a live concert DVD, Show: A Night in the Life of Matchbox Twenty, filmed in Atlanta and featuring 20 songs, including all of their hit singles.
In February 2005, rhythm guitarist Gaynor officially left the group, which had been on hiatus to allow other members to pursue side projects. Rob Thomas went on to release a solo album, ...Something To Be, which became the U.S. Billboard 200 #1 album the first week of its release. The album featured four hit singles: "Lonely No More", "This Is How a Heart Breaks", "Ever the Same", and "Streetcorner Symphony".
In January 2007, Rob Thomas released a single, "Little Wonders", which he wrote for the Disney movie, Meet the Robinsons.
The band has sold in excess of 37 million albums worldwide from the releases of Yourself Or Someone Like You, Mad Season, and More Than You Think You Are. They released their latest album, Exile on Mainstream, on October 2, 2007.
