8/3/1998 10:40 PM I am listening to Tom Petty sing Time To Get Going. The song is on loop so I don't forget what it is that I want to feel while I write. The song reminds me of something they might have played in the movie Easy Rider and I can see Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda and me on the back of Dennis Hopper's bike as the song plays on the big Drive-In Theatre Screen. I look out from the rumble of the bike and see headlight eyes watching me and I wave to them. There are dark figures on the other side of the headlight eyes and sometimes they move. A flash from a zippo here and an orange glow of a smoke tracer being tossed out the window there. Smoke curls up between the cars and what lies ahead, it has no way of knowing, but it's time to move on, it's time to get going. I guess the smoke knows the same feeling that Pete and Dennis and me feel as we ride on down the highway in 1969 on that big Drive-In Theatre Screen in 1998.

This is my feeble attempt to do two things: 1) provide either criticism or commentary regarding the tv days of my youth, and 2) to provide historical observations and interpretation of the history of television in the 1950's and 1960's.
According to U. S. law, there is an allowance for the use of copyrighted work for criticism or commentary. It would be impossible to explore the historical aspects and the rise and decline of television thoughout the years without using snippets from the shows themselves.
The changes television has undergone since a little over a half a century ago might be very difficult for younger viewers to fully comprehend today. Those early black and white images slowly gave way to color, and the technology is once again on the verge of change: digital tv. Throughout the 1950's and 1960's, there were only three major networks: NBC, CBS, and ABC. It wouldn't be until the late 1960's/early 1970's that PBS would come into being. Television slowly evolved from requiring an aerial antenna to the beginnings of cable tv in the 1970's, and satellite tv in the 1980's. Today, it is possible to watch tv shows over the internet. These methods of broadcasting were not even dreamed of in the early days of television.
The majority of television shows in the 1950's/60's were done live. Shows like the Jackie Gleason Show, My Friend Irma, Ed Murrow's See It Now, Ed Sullivan's Toast Of The Town, Studio One, and so many others are forever lost. There never was any attempt to preserve television's early days by the major networks. In fact, networks like NBC and CBS didn't even have the foresight to think that viewers would want to watch "reruns." They figured if the viewing audience had already seen a program, why would they want to watch it again?
Television programming was much more regional in the early days of television. Programs and times that programs were shown in the central Indiana region differed from other cities. Each region even began their "prime time" viewing at different times across the country.
In 1958, our tv set was black and white. I could choose from four different channels to watch. WISH-TV, Channel 8 was our CBS affiliate. WFBM-TV, Channel 6 was NBC, WLWI-TV, Channel 13 was ABC, and WTTV-TV, Channel 4 was an independent station. Tv sets didn't have remotes, so if you wanted to change the channel, you walked over to your set and manually turned the knob to the channel you wished to watch.
I collect TV Guides from the central Indiana region, as that's where I lived throughout the 50's and 60's, and programming elsewhere was different. Any info I provide regarding certain tv shows comes from my TV Guide collection.
The history of television is a fascinating journey to explore. If you want to get a glimpse of what it was like in the early days, either buy or rent "Good Night And Good Luck."

200WD56, yes, you are exactly correct. In my haste to make this, I forgot to type Channel 10 instead of Channel 4. I'll have to redo it. I did speak with Dave Smith when he worked for WTTV in the early years, and I send him a mock-up of this test pattern, asking him if this was how it looked. He said it was very similar. Sorry about the mistake!
Gunsmoke was one of the first "adult" westerns to appear on tv. It was rated the #1 show for 4 years (1957-1960). Another adult western appeared the same week that Gunsmoke debuted: The Life And Legend Of Wyatt Earp, starring Hugh O'Brian. Gunsmoke was originally a radio program that debuted in 1952. William Conrad provided the voice of Matt Dillon in the radio show. Both Gunsmoke and Wyatt Earp began the adult western phase of tv that ran from the mid/late 50's thru the 1960's.
fromthe sidelines: was this show syndicated?
You can watch the entire episode of The Time Element on YouTube. It was recorded off Nick's TV Land. When Nick aired it, they cut Desi's explanation at the end. I've provided only the opening and closing of the show. *Reference: Rod Serling: The Dreams And Nightmares Of Life In The Twilight Zone, a biography by Joel Engel Also referenced was The Twilight Zone Companion, Second Edition, by Marc Scott Zicree
The Time Element eventually aired on November 24, 1958. The program was so popular that CBS received tons of mail supporting the program. CBS then decided that The Twilight Zone should be top priority. It was because of the popularity of The Time Element that The Twilight Zone came into being. Even though The Time Element had an open ending, that problem was handled by Desi Arnaz coming out at the end to explain the possibilities of how it might have happened.

So please do keep in contact over hotmail, I would love that and I love hearing from you! If I make another YT account up in a while I'll send you another friend invite of course.

Thanks - I hope you do keep hold of my e-mail because I will be deleting my Youtube account on Thursday. I have a holiday coming up on Friday and after that I have a lot of work to get on with and don't want too many distractions. Youtube is a huge distraction for me, I keep telling myself off but still go back on it when I should be working!! I know deleting my account may seem a bit final but I can start another one in a few months. I want to try a new kind of channel next time anyway, and it's not as if I uploaded any videos on this page. Now if your one vanished I would be upset!!

Ray1, thanks for the comment on the background. Most of the characters are behind the video windows, but by leaving a comment, you can get a better look. I began working on this after looking at the cover of SGT Pepper. Originally, I was going to fill the entire scene with horror figures, but I've now changed direction to that of the characters that I watched on the old black and white tv when I was a kid.

I love your new background, it's amazing! Did I not say so before, I thought I commented - ah well, it's great fun! All the Hollywood monsters of legend together in one place!!
*runs away screaming in horror*
I'm terribly sorry about the flood.

I just read in the latest Rolling Stone that Yoko Ono lost her lawsuit against the producers of the documentary Expelled for using a 15 second clip of John Lennon's Imagine. The court ruling is based on a U. S. law that allows the use of copyrighted material for criticism or commentary.

Hey everyone! Thanks for all the comments.
Catastrophe struck here last Saturday evening. The worst recorded flood in the history of the town in which I live struck. Our basement had 5 feet of water. I've lost a brand new furnace, the water heater, washer, dryer, and many personal belongings.
