I was born in New York City on Feb. 10, 1967. I was raised by my Father and Grandmother in the Lower East side of Manhattan. When I was 9 years old, we moved to Comerio, Puerto Rico.
My father ,Jose Luis Hernandez, is a musician and has played guitar and bass with legends such as Mario Hernandez and Arsenio Rodriguez. It was his direct influence that peaked my interest in music. My first instrument was the Clarinet which I played since I was 5 years old up until my High School Band days in Puerto Rico.
Growing up in Puerto Rico and constantly listening to such a variety of music, led me to learn how to play the Guitar and subsequently the Bass. At the age of 18 years, I moved back to N.Y. Soon after, I joined The Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts (Boys Harbor N.Y.C.) and had the privilege to study the upright bass with Bassist Guillermo Edgill for a short time.
I was and still am inspired by bassists such as: Oscar De Leon, Joe Nicolas (Ramon Orlando - Orquesta Internacional),
Efrain Hernandez (bassist for Tommy Olivencia, Roberto Roena and many others in P.R.), Fernando Perez (former bassist for El Gran Combo), Edwin Rosario (Raphy Leavitt Y Orquesta La Selecta), Carlos Rondan (Willie Rosario), Edwin Morales (Mulenze), Freddy Rivera (current bassist for El Gran Combo)
After High School I decided to take a different path. It was either Music or Electronics and I chose Electronics. I earned a Consumer Electronics Degree from Technical Career Institute
in 1987 and shortly after started working for the Cable Television Industry in N.Y.C ( cable guy! ).
It has been close to 18 years that I have been a Cable Tech, slowly working my way up the ladder,
earning another Degree from Technical Career Institute
in 2004 ( Electronics Engineering ).
I am currently a Headend Engineering Tech for Time Warner Cable.
Music did not stop though, throughout the years, I have had the opportunity to play with many Salsa bands such as El Conjunto Imagen, Raulin Rosendo, Cuco Valoy, George Lamond and Los Hermanos Moreno, to name a few.
Here is a playlist of some of my performances with George Lamond:
The "Me Niego A Perderte" Video was lots of fun to do.
I am in the video but it's like finding Waldo...LOL!
SEE IF YOU CAN FIND ME.
I thank God for the talent he has given me and for EVERYTHING in my life.
My father Jose Luis, who taught me so much while I was growing up. His style and influence of playing is always evident in my bass lines.
Louie Arona, bassist for Conjunto Imagen, who was the ONLY bassplayer in N.Y. that pushed me, guided me, got me my first Salsa band gig years ago and
believed in me!
I proudly can say he is my brother.
When used properly, the internet can be such a powerful tool. I have to say that thanks to Myspace, I have been able to meet new musicians, reunite with musicians who I already know and have had the opportunity to share with throughout the years, and also connect with my precious family.
(TOP "FRIENDS" LISTED ARE MY FAMILY)
left to right: My sister Levia, my niece Jackie, my only and awsome brother Luisito, my niece Meagen, my niece Natasha, my cousin Eric Jr. and my cousin Erica.
Thank you all for reaching out and your friendship!!
Thanks again for stopping by and may God continue to bless you all!
Sincerely
Joey Hernandez
