In the Japan/South Korea 2002 World Cup, Italy literally had 5 perfectly good goals disallowed in 3 straight games. I doubt that in the whole history of professional soccer any other team received this many bad calls in 3 straight games.
Now on one hand I agree with the critics who said that Italy did not put anything close to their full potential on the field through out this tournament, did not play well together as a team, and used too stubborn defensive tactics. I also agree that the bad calls were honest mistakes, not corruption... But on the other hand, I think Italy deserve tons of sympathy for having too many wrong calls against them too close together. After all, it is a plain fact that none of the 8 teams who did reach the 2002 Quarter-Final would have got there if they had 5 of their goals disallowed in their last 3 games..... In basic conclusion, I would say Italy should have reached the 2002 Quarter-Final despite not putting their capability on the field (just like in the 2006 World Cup, Brazil deservingly reached the Quarter-Final despite not putting anything close to their capability on the field, or working together as team, etc).
